Course Description
This class is an English III (American Literature) class developed for ELL students (students learning English as a second language). It focuses on literature and writing with extra scaffolding because of limited English proficiency.

Standards

This course is aligned with the state English III and WIDA (ESOL) standards.
We will cover themes dealing with the elements of:
            Short Stories
            Poetry
            Drama
            Novels
            Non-fiction
            Essay writing

Behavioral Expectations
·         IDs are to be worn on campus at all times except while in construction or P.E. classes.
·         Hats are not to be worn in the building except on hat days if the fee has been paid.
·         Be on time, respectful, prepared, safe, and communicate in English.
·         Permission will not be given to leave the room during the first or last 15 minutes of class.
·         No food, gum, or drink is allowed in the building; water in a clear bottle with a lid is the exception.
·         Do not cheat! Zeroes do not help your grade.
·         Any and all cell phones and electronic items (I-Pods, etc.) will be taken by the teacher if seen or heard in the classroom and/or during class time.
                                          
Absences and Tardies

Absences: Don’t be absent unless you have a fever, are vomiting, have to go to court, have a dental or doctor’s appointment, or are under a doctor’s care. For these absences, make sure you turn in an excuse to the counselor’s office no later than five days after you return to school.

Tardies: A tardy is when you are late no more than ten minutes to class – after that you are skipping (AWOL), unless you have a note from another teacher. After the third tardy, you have to go to lunch detention every time you receive a tardy. If you don’t, you will be assigned to Saturday school.

Make-up work
School policy states that students will have two days for every day missed to make up work.
